Senior Substation Engineer Employment Type: Direct Hire Salary: $135,000 - $155,000 starting salary (based on experience). Full salary range: $107,000 - $178,600 annually. Location: San Diego, CA or Montreal, Quebec (Hybrid – 3 days onsite)
About the Role We are seeking an experienced Senior Substation Engineer to lead the technical engineering and coordination of utility-scale renewable energy projects across North America. This role supports projects from early-stage development through construction, focusing on solar PV, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). The ideal candidate has strong experience in substation, transmission, and interconnection engineering, along with the ability to manage engineering consultants, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and ensure successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities Development Engineering Support Lead preliminary collection system, substation, transmission, electrical, and civil design activities. Coordinate engineering studies including geotechnical, LiDAR, hydrology, and electrical analyses. Participate in project reviews throughout the development and implementation phases. Serve as the technical lead for cross-functional teams including Development, Permitting, Interconnection, Procurement, Estimating, Resource Assessment, and Project Management. Manage third-party engineering consultants and ensure design quality and consistency. Support technology evaluations, equipment selection, and project cost estimates. Collaborate with development teams to ensure engineering designs satisfy permitting requirements. Conduct site visits to evaluate constructability and support project development.
EPC Design Execution Support preparation of EPC Requests for Proposal (RFPs). Review EPC Schedule of Values (SOV). Coordinate engineering deliverables through all project design milestones (30%, 60%, 90%, and IFC). Manage Requests for Information (RFIs) with EPC contractors, utilities, ISOs, and off-takers. Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering reviews with subject matter experts. Review detailed civil, structural, and electrical design packages to ensure compliance with project specifications.
Construction Support Partner with EPC and site management teams to resolve engineering issues during construction. Review contractor change orders. Support independent engineering technical due diligence activities.
Continuous Improvement Identify opportunities for design optimization and cost reduction. Develop engineering procedures, standards, and best practices. Solve complex technical challenges and share solutions across engineering teams. Capture and implement lessons learned from completed projects. Perform additional engineering duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (preferred), Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Minimum 7 years of experience supporting renewable energy projects. At least 2 years of experience as a Project Engineer. Strong understanding of utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, and/or wind energy systems. Experience with substation, transmission, and interconnection engineering. Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, and design practices. Experience reviewing civil, structural, and electrical engineering design packages. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering software such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or similar power system analysis tools.
Preferred Experience with PV software such as PVSyst, PVCase, or System Advisor Model (SAM).
Skills & Competencies Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Strong organizational and project coordination abilities. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Self-motivated, proactive, and adaptable. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Collaborative mindset with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
