The opportunity:
The University of Manitoba invites applications from qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Manager, Life Safety Systems. Reporting to the Manager, Electrical & Life Safety Systems, the Assistant Manager provides leadership and day-to-day oversight of the University's life safety systems program. This role is responsible for supervising staff and contractors, coordinating the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of life safety systems, and ensuring all work is completed in compliance with applicable codes, standards, legislation, and University policies. This position plays a key role in supporting the safe, reliable, and effective operation of life safety systems across the University's campuses.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
Red Seal Certification in electrical or fire suppression required. CFAA Registered Fire Alarm Technician designation with an 'M' License issued by the office of the fire commissioner would be considered. Valid class 5 driver's license is required. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory and project management experience is required. The successful candidate will possess thorough knowledge of the trades under their supervision, including but not limited to fire alarm systems and wet/dry sprinkler systems. Demonstrated work experience and extensive knowledge regarding life safety systems, including comprehensive familiarity with applicable codes and standards including but not limited to NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 101, CFAA guidelines, and City of Winnipeg Fire Prevention By-laws, and a broad understanding of the operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of life safety systems. The successful candidate is knowledgeable regarding building construction practices and systems, including mechanical, life safety, structural, and ventilation systems, as they relate to new construction, maintenance, and repair work. An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Must have strong interpersonal skills in dealing with a variety of situations, be decisive, unbiased and have the ability to make impartial decisions. Must be capable of planning, organizing, directing, integrating, co-ordinating a large staff and budget to meet the unit’s goals. Must also have the ability to analyse and solve problems, adhere to procedures, policies and ensure compliance with union contracts. Demonstrated computer skills with the ability to compile and maintain accurate computerized reports and records. Must have proficiency with MS Excel, Word and Outlook (email). Physical ability to check the physical operation of the entire campus (various work locations) and recognize potential mechanical problems. Must be physically able to work on roofs (heights), within crawlspaces/confined spaces, and in heat stress areas. Ability to communicate tactfully, effectively, and efficiently with students and staff. Ability to provide and assist in work scheduling, inspections and preventative maintenance planning as well as emergency work planning is a daily requirement which must be carried out with care, in order to permit the smooth operation of all University functions and faculties. Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required. Contractor license: Must be able to obtain a City of Winnipeg Contractor license, if eligible under qualifications.
